Frequently Asked Questions

You have questions—I have answers. Whether you’re new to notarizations or just want to understand the process better, this page covers everything you need to know. If something isn’t listed here, please reach out. I’m always happy to help.

General Notary Questions

What is a notary public?

A notary public is a state-appointed official who serves as an impartial witness when important documents are signed. My role is to verify your identity, ensure you understand what you’re signing, and help prevent fraud. I don’t provide legal advice—I provide a secure, trustworthy process.

Do I need to make an appointment?

Yes, I work by appointment only. This ensures I can give you my full attention and arrive prepared. Scheduling is easy—you can book online, give me a call, or send a text.

What should I bring to my appointment?

For in-person appointments, please bring:

  • Your unsigned document (do not sign it beforehand!)
  • A valid, government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport)
  • Any witnesses required by your document (if applicable—check with me first)
  • Your glasses, if you need them for reading

For remote online notarizations, you’ll need a computer or smartphone with a camera and a stable internet connection. I’ll guide you through the rest.

How much does notarization cost?

Ohio law sets the maximum fee for notarial acts at $5.00 per signature. For mobile appointments, I charge a travel fee based on distance ($40 for Franklin County). For remote online notarizations, the fee is $30 and there is a separate $10 transaction fee that covers the secure technology platform.

I believe in transparent pricing—I’ll always explain the fees upfront, with no surprises.

Can you notarize a document that’s already been signed?

No. The signature must happen in my presence. This is a core part of my role as an impartial witness. If a document is already signed, I cannot notarize it.

Mobile Notary Questions

What is a mobile notary?

A mobile notary comes to you. Instead of you traveling to my location, I travel to your home, office, hospital, or another mutually convenient place within my service area.

Where do you provide mobile services?

I proudly serve Franklin County and surrounding areas, including Columbus, Dublin, Westerville, Powell, Grove City, and more. If you’re unsure whether I cover your location, just ask!

Is there an extra fee for mobile service?

Yes, a travel fee applies based on your distance from my location. I’ll provide this amount when you book so there are no surprises. The first [X] miles are included in my standard mobile fee—beyond that, I charge the IRS-approved mileage rate.

Remote Online Notarization Questions

What is Remote Online Notarization (RON)?

Remote Online Notarization lets you connect with me by secure video from anywhere in the United States. You upload your document, verify your identity, and sign electronically while I witness in real time. It’s legal, secure, and incredibly convenient.

Is remote online notarization legal?

Yes! Remote online notarization is fully authorized under Ohio law and recognized in all 50 states. It carries the same legal weight as an in-person notarization.

What technology do I need?

Just a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera, microphone, and internet connection. The RON platform works in your web browser—no special software to download.

What if I’m not good with technology?

No worries at all. The process is designed to be simple, and I’ll walk you through every step. If you can send an email or make a video call, you can do this.

Can you notarize for someone outside Ohio?

Yes—as long as the signer is physically located within the United States at the time of notarization. I am commissioned in Ohio, but Ohio law allows me to notarize for signers in any U.S. state or territory.

Why is there a transaction fee for RON?

Great question! The transaction fee covers the secure technology platform that makes remote notarization possible. This includes encrypted video, identity verification (credential analysis and knowledge-based authentication), and the legally required recording and storage of our session. It’s a pass-through cost, not extra profit. Learn more on my RON Services Page.

Document-Specific Questions

What types of documents can you notarize?

I can notarize most documents that don’t require an in-person appearance before a specific government agency. Common examples include:

  • Affidavits and sworn statements
  • Powers of attorney
  • Deeds and property transfers
  • Mortgage and refinance documents
  • Vehicle title transfers (Ohio titles)
  • Wills and trusts (with proper signing instructions)
  • Medical directives and living wills
  • Adoption papers
  • Business documents (operating agreements, contracts)

Can you notarize a will? Can I notarize documents in a foreign language?

Yes, but wills have special signing requirements under Ohio law. I’m familiar with the process and can guide you, but I always recommend consulting with the attorney who prepared the will to ensure all formalities are followed correctly.

How do I notarize a car title in Ohio?

Great question—this is a common one! The seller(s) listed on the front of the Ohio title must appear before me with valid ID. The title must be filled out completely except for the seller’s signature, which happens in my presence. I’ll verify identity, witness the signature, and apply my seal. The buyer does not need to be present. For a complete walkthrough, check out my Car Title Notarization Guide.

Can I notarize documents in a foreign language?

I can notarize documents in any language as long as I can communicate with the signer and we can overcome the language barrier. The signer must understand what they are signing. If needed, you may provide a qualified interpreter—but the interpreter cannot act as a witness to your signature unless also serving in that role.

About Me & My Practice

Are you a lawyer?

No, I am not an attorney. I cannot give legal advice, explain what a document means, or tell you which notarization type you need. If you have legal questions, please consult with an attorney.

How do you protect my privacy?

Your privacy matters deeply to me. All documents and personal information are handled with strict confidentiality. For remote notarizations, the platform uses bank-level encryption, and recordings are stored securely as required by law. I never share your information.

What if I need a notary outside your service area?

If I can’t serve you personally, I’m happy to help you find a qualified notary who can. Just ask!
